Mercury retrograde is the stretch of about three weeks, three or four times a year, when the planet Mercury appears to move backward across the sky. Astrologers blame it for lost emails and crossed wires. Astronomers call it a trick of perspective. Here's what is happening up there, what astrology says about it, and a few practical habits that help either way.

What is Mercury retrograde?

Seen from Earth, the planets normally drift slowly eastward against the background stars from one night to the next. A few times a year, Mercury slows down, stops, drifts westward for a few weeks, stops again, and then returns to its usual direction. That westward stretch is called retrograde motion. The usual eastward motion is called direct.

Mercury doesn't really reverse. It keeps circling the Sun the same way it always has. What changes is our viewing angle.

Why Mercury appears to move backward

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the fastest. It finishes an orbit in about 88 days, while Earth takes about 365. Mercury is always lapping us on the inside track.

Picture watching a carousel from the sidewalk. A horse on the far side moves left to right. The same horse on the near side moves right to left, even though the carousel never changed direction. From where we stand, Mercury does the same thing. On the far side of the Sun it appears to move one way. When it swings around the near side and passes between us and the Sun, it appears to move the other way. That near-side pass is the retrograde.

Sky-watchers noticed this thousands of years ago. The word planet comes from a Greek word meaning wanderer.

How often Mercury retrograde happens and how long it lasts

  • Mercury catches up with Earth about every 116 days, so a retrograde comes around roughly every three and a half to four months.
  • That works out to three retrogrades in most calendar years and four in some.
  • Each one lasts about three weeks, usually between 19 and 24 days.
  • Added up, Mercury is retrograde for roughly a fifth of the year.

Every planet has retrograde periods. Mercury's are the most frequent and the shortest.

We don't list dates here, on purpose. They shift every year and a list goes stale fast. For exact dates, check a current ephemeris or an astronomy calendar for the year you need.

The stages astrologers talk about

  1. Pre-shadow. For about two weeks beforehand, Mercury moves through the stretch of sky it will later back over. Some astrologers say the themes start to show here.
  2. Station retrograde. Mercury appears to stand still, then turns backward. The few days around a station are said to be the most noticeable.
  3. Retrograde. About three weeks of apparent backward motion.
  4. Station direct. Mercury stops again and turns forward.
  5. Post-shadow. About two more weeks while Mercury covers the same ground a third time.

What astrologers say Mercury retrograde means

In astrology, Mercury is the planet of communication, thinking, short trips, trade and technology. It's named after the Roman messenger god. When it's retrograde, astrologers say those areas slow down or need a second look. The classic list:

  • messages misread, sent to the wrong person or never sent,
  • travel delays and mix-ups with bookings,
  • glitches with phones, computers and cars,
  • old friends, exes and unfinished projects resurfacing,
  • second thoughts about decisions made in a hurry.

Astrologers also give it an upside. Retrograde periods are described as a good time for anything that starts with "re": review, revise, repair, reconnect, rest.

The zodiac sign matters too. Each retrograde takes place in one sign, sometimes backing into the one before it, and astrologers read it through that sign's themes. A retrograde in a water sign is said to stir feelings and memories. In an air sign it's about conversations and ideas, in an earth sign money and routines, and in a fire sign plans and motivation.

Practical habits for Mercury retrograde

These are sensible in any month. The retrograde is just a handy reminder.

  1. Reread before you send. Check the recipient, the date and the attachment.
  2. Back up your phone and computer.
  3. Confirm bookings, addresses and meeting times the day before.
  4. Leave extra time for travel.
  5. Read contracts slowly. Astrologers traditionally advise against signing big agreements during a retrograde. In real life you often can't wait, so read every line and ask questions.
  6. Finish before you start. Clear out drafts and half-done projects.
  7. Pause before replying to a message that annoys you. Assume a misunderstanding first.

None of this requires believing in astrology. Think of it as a few-times-a-year prompt to do some housekeeping.

Were you born during Mercury retrograde?

Mercury is retrograde about a fifth of the time, so roughly one person in five has it retrograde in their birth chart. Astrologers describe a natal Mercury retrograde as a mind that works inwardly: you may think before you speak, revise a lot, and learn in your own way. Some say people born under it find retrograde periods easier than most.

You can look up your Mercury with the free birth chart calculator. On most charts, a retrograde planet is marked with a small R or Rx.

What science says

Astronomers are clear that retrograde motion is an optical effect. Mercury doesn't change speed or direction, and its pull on Earth is far too small to affect a phone or a mood. There's no evidence that communication or technology fails more often during these weeks. Psychologists point to confirmation bias: once you expect trouble, you notice every glitch and give the planet the credit.

Other planets go retrograde too

  • Venus goes retrograde about every year and a half, for roughly six weeks. Astrologers tie it to love and money. Find yours with the Venus sign calculator.
  • Mars goes retrograde about every two years, for two to two and a half months.
  • Jupiter, Saturn and the outer planets are retrograde for several months of every year. Saturn's yearly retrograde is the reason a Saturn return can cross the exact point up to three times.

For the basics of reading a chart, start with the big three in astrology.

Astrology is a symbolic tradition, and these descriptions are for reflection and entertainment. Your whole chart, and your own choices, say far more than any single placement.

FAQ

What does Mercury retrograde mean?

It's the period when Mercury appears to move backward in the sky as seen from Earth. Astrologers link it with delays and mix-ups in communication, travel and technology.

How often is Mercury in retrograde?

Three times in most years and four in some, about once every three and a half to four months.

How long does Mercury retrograde last?

About three weeks each time. Astrologers add a shadow period of about two weeks before and after.

Is Mercury retrograde bad?

No. Astrologers describe it as a time to slow down and review. There's no scientific evidence that it causes problems.

Should you avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde?

That's the traditional astrological advice. If you can't wait, read the contract carefully and double-check the details, which is good practice in any month.

When is the next Mercury retrograde?

The dates change every year, so check a current ephemeris or astronomy calendar. As a rule of thumb, the next one starts about three months after the last one ends.
