What each planet describes in your chart

Mercury is the mind and how you talk. Its sign shows how you learn, how you put thoughts into words and how fast you make up your mind.

Mars is drive, desire and anger. Its sign shows how you go after what you want, how you compete and what it looks like when you lose your temper.

Jupiter is growth and luck. Its sign points to where you tend to be optimistic, generous or lucky, and what kind of learning or travel expands your life.

Saturn is discipline and lessons. Its sign shows where you feel pressure, where you build slowly, and what you have to earn rather than receive. Your first Saturn return comes around age 29.

Your Sun, Moon and rising sign get most of the attention, but these four planets fill in the rest of the picture. Venus has its own page: use the Venus sign calculator.

Why the signs change at different speeds

Planets cross the zodiac at very different paces:

  • Mercury changes sign every few weeks. It stays close to the Sun, so it is always in your Sun sign or one of the neighboring signs.
  • Mars spends roughly six to seven weeks in a sign on average, though retrograde periods can stretch that to several months.
  • Jupiter stays about a year in each sign, and takes about 12 years to go around the zodiac.
  • Saturn stays two to three years in each sign, and takes about 29 years to go around.

That's why so many people share a Jupiter or Saturn sign with their classmates, while Mercury and Mars signs are much more personal.

Retrograde planets in a birth chart

A planet is retrograde when it appears to move backward through the zodiac, which is an effect of Earth's orbit. Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all do it, and the calculator tells you whether each one was retrograde at birth.

In a birth chart, a retrograde planet is traditionally read as working more inward. Its themes are processed privately or revisited later in life rather than expressed straight away. Many people have at least one retrograde planet, and it isn't a flaw.

  • Mercury in Cancer: thinks through memory and mood, and learns best when a subject feels personal.

How we calculate your planet signs

Planet positions come from the astronomy-engine library, which computes where each planet really was on your date. It's the same calculation behind our birth chart. Signs use the tropical zodiac, which is standard in Western astrology.

With only a date, the calculator uses the middle of the day. If a planet changed signs on your birthday, it shows both signs, and a birth time and place settles which one is yours. Adding a time and place also gives the house each planet falls in.

Astrology is a symbolic tradition, and this calculator is for reflection and entertainment.

FAQ

What is my Mars sign?

Your Mars sign is the zodiac sign Mars was in when you were born. Enter your birth date above and the calculator shows it, along with the degree and whether Mars was retrograde.

What does Saturn in Aries mean?

Saturn in Aries is usually read as a lesson in patience, self-control and independence. People with it often feel they have to earn the right to act on their own. See the full list under Saturn in each sign above.

Do I need my birth time?

Usually not. A date is enough for the signs. A time matters if a planet changed signs on your birthday, and you need a time and place to get the house each planet falls in.

What does a retrograde planet in my chart mean?

It means the planet looked like it was moving backward when you were born. Traditionally that's read as an inward, slower expression of that planet's themes. It's common and not a bad sign.

Why do my friends have the same Jupiter sign?

Jupiter stays in one sign for about a year, and Saturn for two to three. Anyone born in the same stretch shares that sign, so classmates often match. Mercury and Mars move faster, so they differ more.

What is my Mercury sign?

It's the sign Mercury was in at your birth, and it shows how you think and communicate. It's always your Sun sign or one right next to it.

Is the planet sign calculator free?

Yes. The signs, degrees, retrograde status and meanings are free. There is no paid reading on this page.
