What the Mercury retrograde tracker shows
Vela sits at her brass astrolabe, and the page opens with the one question most people come with: is Mercury retrograde right now? The answer is a plain Yes or No. If it's Yes, you see when Mercury turns direct again. If it's No, you see when the next retrograde starts.
On the plate, Mercury sits at its current position in the zodiac. While it's retrograde, you can watch it slide backward. Under the astrolabe the page lists:
- the status of every planet today, from Mercury to Pluto, as direct or retrograde, with the date it turns;
- all the Mercury retrograde periods for this year and next, each with its start date, end date, the signs it moves through and its shadow periods;
- the retrograde periods of the other planets this year.
Dates are calculated with the astronomy-engine library from the planets' real positions, measured from Earth against the tropical zodiac. They appear in your own time zone, taken from your browser. The page is free, and you don't need an account.
What Mercury retrograde actually is
Mercury never stops or reverses. It only looks that way from Earth. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than we do, so every few months it catches up with Earth and passes us on the inside track. Like a car overtaking you on the highway, it seems to drift backward for a while against the background of stars.
This happens three or four times a year, and each retrograde lasts about three weeks. Before and after, Mercury seems to slow down and pause, then change direction. The effect is an optical illusion, and astronomers call it apparent retrograde motion. Every other planet from Mars outward does the same thing, for the same reason.
Shadow periods
Astrologers don't count only the three weeks of the retrograde itself. Before Mercury turns retrograde, it passes the degrees of the zodiac it is about to cover again. That stretch is called the pre-shadow. After Mercury turns direct, it has to travel back over the same ground before it leaves that territory. That is the post-shadow.
Each shadow lasts a couple of weeks. Taken together with the retrograde, the whole window can run for two or three months. The tracker lists the shadow dates next to each retrograde, so you can see the full span at a glance.
What astrology says about it
Mercury is the planet of communication, thinking, travel and technology. In astrology, a Mercury retrograde is read as a time when those areas get a little unreliable. The traditional list of trouble spots includes:
- misunderstandings and crossed wires in messages;
- delayed or rerouted trips;
- glitches with phones, email and other tech;
- contracts and agreements that get changed or reopened.
The other half of the story is more positive. The theme is anything that starts with "re": review, revise, reconsider, reconnect. Many astrologers treat the period as a good time to finish old projects, go back over your work and get back in touch with people from your past.
There's no scientific evidence that a Mercury retrograde affects events. Treat it as a fun, symbolic way to pace your year. This page is for reflection and entertainment.
What to do and what to avoid
If you like to plan around it, these are the usual suggestions:
- Double-check details: dates, addresses, attachments and spelling.
- Back up your files before big updates.
- Leave extra time when you travel.
- Edit, organize and finish things you already started.
- Reach out to an old friend or pick up a dropped project.
- Hold off on big purchases, especially electronics, when you can wait.
- Read before you sign, and ask questions when something is vague.
You don't have to stop living. Most astrologers say to keep going, but with more care. The shadow dates in the tracker tell you when to start paying attention.
Other retrograde planets
Mercury is the one people talk about, because it goes retrograde most often. The tracker shows the others too, and this is roughly how they behave.
- Venus retrograde: about every 18 months, lasting around 40 days. Read as a time to revisit relationships, money and what you value.
- Mars retrograde: about every two years, lasting around two to two and a half months. Energy and drive feel slower, and old conflicts can resurface.
- Jupiter retrograde: once a year, for about four months. A time to reflect on growth, beliefs and long-term plans.
- Saturn retrograde: once a year, for about four and a half months. A time to look again at responsibilities, structure and long-term commitments.
- Uranus retrograde: once a year, for about five months. Change and restlessness are read as turning inward for a while.
- Neptune retrograde: once a year, for about five months. Dreams, intuition and illusions come under review.
- Pluto retrograde: once a year, for about five to six months. A slow period for the deepest themes of power, control and transformation.
Because the outer planets spend several months of every year retrograde, at any moment there are usually a few of them in retrograde. The status list at the top of the tracker shows which ones they are today.
Retrograde in your birth chart
Every planet was either direct or retrograde the moment you were born, and astrologers note it on your chart. A natal retrograde Mercury is often read as a more reflective, careful thinker who processes things before speaking. About one person in five is born with Mercury retrograde.

FAQ
Is Mercury retrograde right now?
The answer is at the top of this page, and it updates with the date. It tells you Yes or No, and either when the retrograde ends or when the next one starts.
When does Mercury retrograde end?
When Mercury is retrograde, the tracker shows the date it turns direct again, in your own time zone. The post-shadow period then runs for a couple of weeks after that.
How often does Mercury go retrograde?
Three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time. The tracker lists every retrograde for this year and next, with start dates, end dates and signs.
What planets are retrograde right now?
Look at the planet status list under the astrolabe. It shows Mercury through Pluto as direct or retrograde today, with the date each one turns. The outer planets are retrograde for several months of every year, so it's common for more than one to be retrograde at a time.
What does Mercury retrograde mean?
In astronomy, it's an illusion: Mercury looks like it moves backward because Earth and Mercury orbit the Sun at different speeds. In astrology, it's a period when communication, travel and technology are said to need extra care, and a good time to review and redo.
Should I sign a contract during Mercury retrograde?
Astrologers suggest waiting if you can, or reading the terms more carefully if you can't. There's no evidence that a retrograde changes the outcome of a contract, so use it as a reason to double-check the details.
Is it free?
Yes. Checking Mercury's status, the retrograde dates and the planet list is free, with no sign-up and no paid reading.
