What is a birth chart?
A birth chart (or natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact time and place you were born. It shows which zodiac sign and which house each planet was in, and the angles (aspects) between them. Astrologers read it as a picture of personality, strengths, challenges and life themes.
What your birth chart shows
- Sun sign: your core identity and the sign most people know.
- Moon sign: your emotions and inner needs. Find just yours with the moon sign calculator.
- Rising sign (Ascendant): how you come across and approach life. See the rising sign calculator.
- Mercury, Venus, Mars: how you think, love and act.
- Jupiter and Saturn: where you grow and where you learn discipline.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto: generational themes, personal through their houses.
- The 12 houses: the areas of life where each planet's energy plays out (self, money, communication, home, creativity, health, partnerships and more).
- Aspects: conjunctions, trines, squares, oppositions and sextiles between planets.
Why your birth time matters
The rising sign and houses change roughly every two hours and every few minutes respectively, so an accurate birth time makes a big difference. Check your birth certificate if possible. If you don't know your time, we'll still calculate your planets by sign, but houses and the rising sign will be left out.
How to read your chart
- Start with the Big 3: sun, moon and rising signs.
- Look at personal planets: Mercury, Venus and Mars.
- Notice where planets cluster: a crowded sign or house often highlights a major theme.
- Check the aspects: harmonious trines and sextiles, challenging squares and oppositions.
