What is the north node?

The north node and south node, together called the lunar nodes, aren't planets. They're the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path the Sun appears to take through the sky. The two nodes are always exactly opposite each other.

In astrology:

  • The south node describes what comes naturally: habits, talents and comfort zones you start life with.
  • The north node describes the direction of growth: qualities that feel unfamiliar at first and become more rewarding over time.

How the nodes move

The nodes move backward through the zodiac and take about 18.6 years to complete a full circle, spending roughly a year and a half in each sign. That means people born within the same 18 months usually share a north node sign, and the nodes return to their birth position around ages 18 to 19, 37 and 56. These nodal returns are often read as moments of redirection.

How to use your north node

Think of it as a direction, not a destination. Notice where you default to your south node habits, and try the north node approach in small ways. The house your north node falls in shows the area of life where this plays out; see it in your free birth chart.

FAQ

How do I find my north node?

Enter your birth date. The calculator finds the sign the Moon's north node was in on that day. Your south node is the opposite sign.

What does the north node mean?

It's read as your direction of growth: the qualities and experiences that help you develop over your life.

What is the south node?

The point opposite the north node. It represents what feels familiar and easy, which can become a comfort zone.

Do I need my birth time for my north node?

Usually not. The nodes change sign about every 18 months. A birth time is only needed if you were born on a day the node changed signs, or to find its house.

What is the difference between the true node and the mean node?

The mean node is an averaged position. The true node accounts for the small wobble in the Moon's orbit. They're usually within a degree or two of each other; this calculator uses the true node.

What is a nodal return?

The moment the nodes return to where they were at your birth, about every 18.6 years.
