What is a planetary return?

A planetary return happens when a planet comes back to the exact degree of the zodiac it held on the day you were born. Each planet does this on its own schedule: the Moon about every 27.3 days, Venus roughly every 8 months to a year and a half, Saturn about every 29.5 years.

Astrologers read a return as a fresh start for whatever that planet rules. The chart for that moment is treated as a short forecast of the planet's themes until the next return. Your Saturn return is the best known example. This page covers two faster ones, Venus and the Moon, and a time-lord technique called annual profections.

Venus return

Venus stands for love, attraction, money and the things you value. Your Venus return is the date Venus comes back to its birth degree, so it's usually read as a reset in those areas: how you give and receive affection, what you spend on, what you find beautiful.

Venus returns about once every 8 months to a year and a half, depending on where it was at birth. Retrograde can make Venus pass your exact degree three times in a row, so the calculator lists every crossing instead of a single date. Many astrologers count the whole stretch from the first crossing to the last.

People commonly use a Venus return to:

  • Start or reset a relationship, or look honestly at the one they're in.
  • Review budgets, income and spending habits.
  • Pick up an art, a style or a hobby they enjoy.
  • Notice which values they've been putting second.

The calculator shows your next Venus return and the previous one.

Lunar return

The Moon moves through the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days, so a lunar return comes roughly once a month. It's the moment the Moon is back at its birth degree.

The Moon rules mood, habits and the sense of being at home. Astrologers cast a chart for each lunar return and treat it as a forecast for the coming month, often described as an emotional reset: what you need, what drains you, and where your attention is likely to go for the next four weeks or so.

Because the return is a specific moment, the calculator gives a date and time, shown in your own time zone, and lists the next few after it so you can plan around them.

Annual profections

Annual profection is a technique from Hellenistic astrology, the tradition that grew up in the Greek-speaking world around two thousand years ago. It's a way to choose one house and one planet to focus on for each year of your life.

The method is simple. At birth you're in the 1st house. Each birthday moves you forward one house, so a 1-year-old is in the 2nd house, a 2-year-old is in the 3rd, and at 12 the cycle starts again at the 1st. The house you land on is the activated house for that year, the part of life the year tends to center on.

The time lord is the planet that traditionally rules the sign on the activated house. In Hellenistic practice that planet is the one to watch for the year, along with the house it sits in and the transits it receives. The calculator reports:

  • The activated house for your current profection year.
  • The sign on that house, counted from your rising sign when you give a birth time.
  • The time lord, using the traditional rulers (the Sun, Moon and five visible planets, so Scorpio goes to Mars, Aquarius to Saturn and Pisces to Jupiter).

If you leave out your birth time, the rising sign is unknown, so you get the house only.

Age to profection house

The pattern repeats every 12 years.

Profected house Ages
1st house 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72
2nd house 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73
3rd house 2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74
4th house 3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63, 75
5th house 4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64, 76
6th house 5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65, 77
7th house 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78
8th house 7, 19, 31, 43, 55, 67, 79
9th house 8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68, 80
10th house 9, 21, 33, 45, 57, 69, 81
11th house 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70, 82
12th house 11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71, 83

The age is your age at your most recent birthday, and the profection year runs from one birthday to the next. A year in your 7th house is usually read as a year about partnerships, and a year in your 10th house as one about career and reputation. Every house has its own subjects, which you can look up in your birth chart.

How these fit with your solar return

Your solar return chart is cast for the moment the Sun returns to its birth degree each year, near your birthday. It covers the same span as a profection year, from one birthday to the next.

Astrologers often read the two together. The profection year names the house and the time lord, and the solar return shows what that planet is doing in this year's chart. The Venus and lunar returns work inside that frame: a Venus return is a longer cycle for relationships and money, and the lunar return refreshes things month by month.

A simple order for reading them:

  1. Find your profection house and time lord for the year.
  2. Look at where that planet sits in your solar return.
  3. Check your Venus return dates for relationship and money themes.
  4. Use each lunar return as a monthly check-in.

Astrology is a symbolic tradition, and this calculator is for reflection and entertainment.

FAQ

When is my Venus return?

It's the date Venus comes back to the degree it held at your birth, and it comes around every 8 months to a year and a half. Enter your birth date above to see the next one and the previous one. If Venus is retrograde, it may cross the degree three times and all three dates are listed.

How often is a lunar return?

About every 27.3 days, so roughly once a month. The calculator gives the next date and time in your own time zone, followed by the next few.

What is a profection year?

It's a Hellenistic technique that links each year of your life to one house of your chart. You start in the 1st house at birth and move one house at every birthday. The house you're in is the focus of that year.

How do I find my time lord?

Find the sign on your activated house, then take that sign's traditional ruler. For example, if the sign is Libra, the time lord is Venus. The calculator does this for you, and it needs a birth time so it can count from your rising sign.

Do I need my birth time?

Not for the dates. Venus and lunar returns only need your birth date, and the profection house depends on your age. A birth time (and place) adds the sign on the house and the time lord. Without it you get the house only.

Is the Venus return the same as a solar return?

No. A solar return is the Sun coming back to its birth degree, once a year. A Venus return is Venus coming back to its own birth degree, on its own schedule. See the solar return chart for the yearly one.

Is it free?

Yes. All three results are free and need no sign-up.
