Free Rune Reading: Cast the Norse Runes

Vela lays a dark velvet cloth on her table and casts stones from the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark. Type a question if you like, choose one rune or three, and turn them over one by one. Every reading is free, with no sign-up.

What are runes?

Runes are the letters of the oldest Germanic alphabet, carved into wood, bone and stone across Northern Europe from roughly the second century. The best known set is the Elder Futhark, named after its first six letters (f, u, th, a, r, k). It has 24 runes, split into three groups of eight called aettir (singular: aett): Freya's, Heimdall's and Tyr's. Each rune stands for a sound and carries a name that is also a word, such as "cattle," "ice" or "day." Those names are the starting point for the meanings used in divination today.

People searching for Norse runes or Nordic runes usually mean this Elder Futhark set. Later alphabets, such as the Younger Futhark and the Anglo-Saxon futhorc, used fewer or more letters.

How to do a rune reading

Here on this page

  1. Think of a question, or leave it blank for a general message. Open questions ("What do I need to know about this move?") work better than yes or no ones.
  2. Choose your cast. One rune gives a quick message. Three runes are the Norns, the three fates of Norse myth: past, present and future.
  3. Cast. Vela scatters the stones across the cloth.
  4. Turn them over one at a time. Read each rune's name, sound, keywords and meaning. A rune may land upright or merkstave (reversed).
  5. Put the runes together. Ask how the three meanings tell one story, and what you could do about it.

With your own set

Runes are usually carved or painted on stones, wood or clay tiles and kept in a cloth bag. Hold the bag and think of your question. For a three-rune reading, draw three runes without looking, one at a time, and lay them left to right as past, present and future. Some people cast the whole set onto a cloth and read only the runes that land face up. Choose one method and use it every time.

Protection runes

The rune most often called the protection rune is Algiz (ᛉ). Its shape looks like a figure with raised arms or an elk's antlers, and it stands for shelter, guardianship and a safe boundary. Thurisaz (ᚦ), the thorn, is a second defensive rune, and Othala (ᛟ) is tied to the protection of home and family. People carve or draw these on stones and jewelry as a reminder to keep their boundaries. There is no magic in the symbol itself, but it can help you focus on what you want to protect.

Merkstave: reversed runes

When a rune lands upside down, it is read in merkstave, an old term for "dark staff." Most readers take it as the same rune with a blocked, delayed or inward-facing energy: strength that is low, a message that is unclear, a gift that is stuck. It does not have to be bad news. It often points to what needs attention.

Nine runes look the same whichever way up they fall, so they cannot be reversed: Gebo, Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Sowilo, Ingwaz and Dagaz. This is a common modern convention, and some readers read other runes differently. On this page those nine always appear upright, and the other fifteen can land either way.

An honest note on rune divination

The runes themselves are real and old. We know the alphabet from inscriptions, and the rune names come from medieval poems. What we do not have is a surviving ancient manual for using them to tell fortunes. The system of meanings used today was largely built in the 20th century by modern writers, drawing on those old names and on Norse myth. Treat it as a tool for reflection and entertainment: a way to ask better questions and notice what you already think. It is not a prediction.

FAQ

How do I do a rune reading?

Think of a question, then draw one rune for a quick message or three for past, present and future. Read the name, keywords and meaning of each, and note whether it is upright or merkstave. Here, you choose one or three runes and turn the stones over one at a time. With your own set, draw the runes from a bag without looking.

What is the protection rune?

Algiz (ᛉ) is the best known protection rune. It stands for guardianship, shelter and instinct about danger. Thurisaz is a defensive rune too, and Othala is linked to the safety of home.

What does a reversed rune mean?

A reversed rune, or merkstave, is usually read as the rune's energy blocked, delayed or turned inward. Fehu reversed, for example, can mean money or energy leaking away. Nine runes cannot be reversed because they look the same either way up.

How many runes are there?

The Elder Futhark has 24 runes in three groups of eight (aettir). Some modern sets add a blank "Odin's rune," but it is not part of the old alphabet and is not used here.

Can I use runes for yes or no?

Runes are better at describing a situation than giving a plain answer. You can still ask a closed question and read the rune's tone: Sowilo, Wunjo and Jera lean toward yes, while Isa, Nauthiz and Hagalaz suggest delay or difficulty. For a direct answer, try yes or no tarot.

Is this rune reading free?

Yes. Casting the runes and reading each meaning is free and needs no account. There is no paid reading on this page.

Are runes the same as tarot?

No. Tarot uses a 78-card deck with imagery and a long reading tradition. Runes are 24 letters, each with a name and a short set of meanings, so a rune reading is shorter and more direct.
