In astrology, your "big three" (or big 3) are your sun sign, moon sign and rising sign. Together they give a much fuller picture than your sun sign alone. Here's what each one means and how to find yours.

Big 3 Astrology: Sun, Moon and Rising Signs Explained
The big three at a glance
| Placement | What it describes | What you need to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Core identity, ego, direction in life | Birth date |
| Moon sign | Emotions, instincts, what makes you feel safe | Birth date, ideally with birth time |
| Rising sign (Ascendant) | First impressions, outward style, approach to life | Birth date, exact birth time and birthplace |
Sun sign: who you are
Your sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. It's the one you already know from horoscopes. It describes your basic character, what drives you and where you want to shine. See the dates for all 12 in our zodiac signs guide.
Moon sign: how you feel
Your moon sign is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days, so people born in the same week can have different moon signs. It describes your emotional reactions, your comfort zone and what you need from the people close to you. Find it with the moon sign calculator.
Rising sign: how you come across
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. It changes about every two hours, which is why birth time matters. It describes the first impression you make and how you handle new situations. It also sets the layout of the 12 houses in your chart. Find it with the rising sign calculator.
How the big three work together
A common way to put it: the sun is who you are, the moon is how you feel, and the rising sign is how others see you at first.
For example, someone with a Capricorn sun, Pisces moon and Leo rising may come across as confident and warm (Leo rising), be motivated by achievement and responsibility (Capricorn sun), and be far more sensitive in private than people expect (Pisces moon).
If two or three of your big three are in the same sign, that sign's traits tend to be especially noticeable. If they're in very different signs, you may feel like a mix, or find that your sun sign description only half fits.
Why your sun sign doesn't always fit
If you've never felt like a "typical" example of your sun sign, your moon and rising signs are the first place to look. People often relate to their rising sign in how they act around strangers, and to their moon sign in how they act at home.

FAQ
What is the big 3 in astrology?
Your sun sign, moon sign and rising sign (Ascendant).
How do I find my big three?
You need your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace. Enter them into a rising sign or birth chart calculator to see all three.
Which of the big three is most important?
None is more important; they describe different things. The sun is identity, the moon is emotion and the rising sign is outward style.
Can I find my big three without a birth time?
You can find your sun sign and usually your moon sign. The rising sign needs an accurate birth time.
Can my sun, moon and rising all be the same sign?
Yes. It happens when you're born around sunrise near a new moon, and the traits of that sign tend to be strongly emphasized.
